Inspiration for Structure and Layout

Over the course of this semester we have been exposed to various different online documentaries. Before starting I thought it would be best to revisit some of these to generate ideas for my A2 proposal.

Soul Patron was the online documentary that I used for my A1 analysis. I liked the strong sense of art style combining both filmography, collage and animation. Each scene is full of things to explore and look at, and the citizens who inhabit each scene make the documentary feel alive. The interface is pleasing to use and the black and white contrasts well with the vibrant scenes. The non linearity allows the audience to explore at their own pace and makes looking at each scene really enjoyable as each one contains lots of detail. These are all aspects which I will take influence from to form the ideas in my proposal.

Although in my first blog post I said that I wasn’t looking to use storytelling in my proposed online documentary, I believe that it might be beneficial to have a story element similar to that of Soul Patron. While the story could be fictional, I can use factual information and relevant media regarding the issue of plastic waste within the project so that it still stays within the real of documentary making. This media could include stock footage and photos of real events, televised news stories and filmed interviews.
